The inauguration ceremony of the newly appointed members of the Tax Tribunal took place on January 24, 2024 at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. The event presided over by the Honorable Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Mr. Seedy K. M. Keita. The ceremony was also grace by the Commissioner General of the Gambia Revenue Authority, Mr. Yankuba Darboe, Board Chair, Lucy Fye Jagne, Deputy Commissioner General and Head of Domestic Taxes, Commissioner of Customs and other top officials from the GRA and the Ministry of Finance.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Seedy Keita, emphasise the importance of a fair and just taxation system, affirming the government's commitment to transparency and accountability. The Minister of Finance continued to express his ministry's readiness to support the newly appointed members of the Tax Tribunal in carrying out their responsibilities. He highlighted the importance of their role in ensuring a balanced and equitable tax system that promoted economic growth and development in The Gambia.
Mr. Yankuba Darboe, the Commissioner General of the Gambia Revenue Authority, also stated that the appointment of the Tax Tribunal members was a crucial step in building a system that ensured taxpayers paid their fair share of the tax burden.
"In the pursuit of a fair, transparent, and just taxation system; the government is taking decisive steps, and the establishment of the Tax Tribunal is a testament to that commitment," Mr. Darboe announced.
The newly appointed Tax Tribunal President, Hon. Justice George Appah Akwabeng, on behalf of the Tribunal Members offered the vote of thanks. He expressed his profound gratitude for the honor of being appointed as the president of the Tax Tribunal in The Gambia.
"I am deeply humbled by the trust and confidence bestowed upon me and my fellow members of the Tax Tribunal. It is our solemn duty to uphold the principles of fairness, justice, and transparency in our pursuit of resolving tax disputes," Justice Akwabeng stated.
He went on to express his commitment to working diligently to ensure that the Tax Tribunal played a pivotal role in upholding the rule of law within the taxation system of The Gambia. The ceremony concluded with a sense of optimism as attendees looked forward to the Tax Tribunal's contributions to the country's economic and legal landscape.
